Dental Implant

Updated: Oct 14, 2023

A dental implant is used to replace the lost tooth or teeth to complete the intraoral function. It is a titanium screw placed in the lost tooth. It is placed in the jawbone just like a tooth root.

Dental implant surgery is the process of imitating tooth roots with screw-like titanium parts and replacing damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function very much like real teeth. Replacing missing teeth using implant-supported restorations is a widely accepted treatment approach. Dental implant treatment can offer an alternative to removable dentures or bridges.

Anyone who has completed the jaw development and does not have advanced bone loss is suitable for implant. Implants are usually made over the age of 18..

How dental implant surgery is performed depends on the types of the implant and the condition of the jawbone. Dental implant surgery may include several supportive bone and soft tissue procedures. If bone support is considered insufficient, new bone formation can be increased by supportive materials such as bone grafts, membranes, etc. After the implants are placed, the process may take several months cause bone healing takes time.

How Many Implants Can Be Made?

If you lost a single tooth, you will need an implant to replace that tooth. If you have missing teeth and they are next to each other, you can still have one implant for each tooth, or the missing teeth can be supported by making a bridge with two or more implants. If you do not have any teeth in the jaw, your dentist can complete all the teeth in your jaw with 4, 6 or 8 implants. Your dentist will advise you about the best option for you.

In Which Situations Is the Implant Applied?

Implant is used to correct the deficiency when a tooth or teeth are lost. Implants can be applied to replace lost teeth when the bone is sufficient and the patient's systemic conditions allow for advanced surgery.

How Long Does the Implant Take?

In some cases, the implant can be placed at the same time as the tooth is extracted. These are called 'immediate implants'. When this is not suitable, it is expected that 3-4 months will pass for the prosthesis after the implants are placed. This allows the implant to fuse with the bone. Sometimes treatment can take longer. Your dentist can give you a rough timeline before treatment begins.

Is There Any Pain After Implant?

Implant placement is usually easier than extracting complicated tooth and is usually done using local anesthesia. You will not feel any pain during implant placement, but you may feel some discomfort during the week after surgery, just like after tooth extraction.

General anesthetics are rarely used for implants and are usually used in very complex cases.

Things to Consider After Implant

After implant surgery, your dentist will give you instructions on what to watch out for. Antibiotics, painkillers and mouthwash may be required after surgery. Ice can be applied to the operated area for 24 hours. You may need to change some of your eating, drinking and smoking habits. Your doctor will give detailed information.

What are Implant Alternatives?

In order to close the gap in the area where the implant is planned, the bridge can be planned by preparing the tooth in front and behind the gap. If there is no tooth in front of or behind the gap, it will not be possible to make a bridge. In such cases, removable or total prostheses can be used. But because these prostheses are mobile, they may not be very comfortable.

Which Implant Brand Is Good?

There are more than 400 implant brands currently used in Turkey. The main implants used are German, American, Swiss, Italian, Swedish, South Korean, Israeli and Turkish implant brands.

As Dentaş Clinique, many brands such as Straumann, Nobel, Medentica, Direct, Osstem, Dentis, Bredent, Implance, BioHorizons are used according to patient preference among the brands we have preferred for nearly 40 years.

After the dentist and the patient decide on the implant treatment, they can decide together which brand to choose. Thus, an implant brand can be preferred both according to the patient's bone compatibility and budget.

Implant Prices

Implant prices vary depending on where the implant is produced, research and development costs, the technology used in its production, service network, and the cost of employment. Please consult your doctor for the prices of the implants which you prefer with your doctor.
